American Express has partnered with ShopRunner to offer its charge and credit card customers free two-day shipping for eligible items bought from more than 80 online retailers. To enjoy the privilege, card members need only enroll at www.shoprunner.com/americanexpress.

A valuable perk

This is a potentially valuable perk, as ShopRunner normally charges consumers $79 for annual membership. There are more than 80 participating online retailers, including:

  • Brooks Brothers
  • drugstore.com
  • GNC
  • Lord & Taylor
  • Neiman Marcus
  • PetSmart
  • Toys R Us

Items that are eligible for free shipping can be identified on participating retailers’ websites by the ShopRunner logo that appears next to them. They can be delivered to any physical address in the U.S., including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico in most cases. And, if you’re dissatisfied with your purchase, you can return the item, also free of shipping charges.

Delivery an issue when shopping online

As recently reported, 38 percent of respondents to a recent survey reported that they plan to shop online in in the run-up to this holiday season, fewer than many might expect. And one of the reasons consumers may prefer to shop in brick-and-mortar stores is savings on delivery charges. Indeed, in the press release announcing its partnership with ShopRunner, American Express cited data from a comScore study conducted last year that suggested more than half of online shoppers abandon their purchases at the check-out phase owing to high shipping charges. That’s something that many AmEx customers may find themselves doing less frequently in the future.
