American Airlines is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its AAdvantage frequent flyer program by giving away 25,000-mile awards to 1,700 passengers on 10 of the airline’s flights, for a total giveaway of over 42 million miles. The 25,000-mile awards each equate to one free economy-class ticket on the airline, and winning “Celebration Flights” are only being announced 30 minutes before departure.

MasterCard International is sponsoring the giveaway. As part of the anniversary celebration, American also announced a month-long program of special discount deals, including reduced mileage awards. American was the first airline to offer a frequent flyer program, and it claims to have over 50 million members in the AAdvantage program today.
