The average American is carrying $2328 in credit card debt, according to a survey by Myvesta. This is actually a decrease from the $2627 average that the survey found a year ago. The survey also found that, on average, Americans hold 2.9 credit cards each.

Credit card debt was greatest in the western states, and least in the midwestern states. Males carried slightly more debt than females — $2369 to $2289. And married individuals carried more debt than unmarried people — $2625 to $1744. The findings were based on telephone surveys conducted in early November of 1000 people.
