Area Coke Machines to Take Credit Cards
MasterCard and the Philadelphia Coca-Cola Bottling Company announced
last week the rollout of 1,000 credit-card enabled vending machines
for Coke products. Customers with credit cards equipped with
MasterCard's PayPass contactless technology will be able to
make a purchase by tapping their cards on the machines' e-Port
payment terminal (supplied by USA Technologies). Other credit
card users can make purchases via the traditional card swiping
method.
Earlier
trials by MasterCard and USA Technologies in New York City and
Atlanta led to the larger rollout in Philadelphia.
MasterCard
PayPass uses radio frequency to transmit payment details. PayPass
cards also include magnetic stripe technology, so the cards
can also be used in their traditional manner. According to MasterCard,
there are approximately seven million PayPass cards and devices
in the market & approximately 30,000 merchant locations around
the world that accept PayPass.
